"Life, uh... finds a way."

Hey you guys!  There is a charity movie screening-slash-art-auction going on this weekend called "Hey You Guys!" wherein a bunch of people congregate at the Rialto Theater in Pasadena, watch Ghostbusters and bid on some sick artwork.  The theme of the art is "movies that inspired you."  I've read Jurassic Park like five times between grades 5 through 7 and the spine of my copy has more creases in it than a raisin, lodged in a pug's forehead.  The movie was basically on loop whenever I was home alone, and I learned how to draw people from the storyboards in the back of the "Making of Jurassic Park" book.  So yeah, I guess Jurassic Park played a big part in my upbringing. Here is my piece for the auction!

I wish I could find a way to print it like this:

Terrible Yellow Eyes

So last week I finished my pieces for Gallery Nucleus's Terrible Yellow Eyes show, as inspired by Cory Godbey's amazing art-conspiracy.  I made one painting and one pen/ink.  Hope you like, and much thanks to Cory and Nucleus!

AMULET II

Hello everybody on the internet!  So, almost a year ago I started working under Kazu to help him color his comic book Amulet II: The Stonekeeper's Curse.

It's a bombastic kid's-adventure story with things like magic, parkour, sword-fights, giant robots, and evil elves.  What I like about the story is the horrible, nerve-wracking danger the protagonist-kids and their mother are put through.  Kazu's bit of art-direction that dictated the look and feel throughout the book: "I want you to preserve the cartoony-ness of the world, but also make it feel like the apocalypse."

I'm pretty sure that baby animal on the above page survives.  Pretty sure.  Here's some stuff I colored, below:

I learned a bit about digital-painting over the past year.  The main thing that blew my mind was approaching Photoshop like a gaffer instead of a painter - drawing a scene and "lighting" it with dodge- and shadow-brushes instead of mixing colors by hand.  Here's some commemorative fanart I did:

The talented peeps on the Amulet crew : Amy, Jason, Kean, Stuart, Denver, Ryan Hoffmann, Michael, Tim, Catherine, Alan, Patrick Race, Cayleigh Allen, and Felix Lim.  It was awesome working with you guys!

The Sweet Science Fiction

Coming at you April 14, 2009

In trying out for a story in the Galactica Manga, I chose to do a few sketches of Admiral Adama.  The BSG ensemble is pretty well cast with iconic faces, but Eduardo James Olmos's mug stands out the most. Such a fierce, weathered gaze!  He evokes the wisdom of Jaime Escalante with the deadliness of a T1000.
